Disciples Generous Response - Abundance

  • Open Hands

    Length: 1–2 minutes

By: Rocío Paz | Palm Sunday

Summary: A story about how one congregation in Lima, Peru, honored Jesus on Palm Sunday by taking breakfast into the streets, discovering that when we follow Christ with open hands, we find his face in those we serve.

    Story

Palm Sunday begins Holy Week with celebration. We wave branches and remember Jesus entering Jerusalem. But Palm Sunday also reminds us what kind of king Jesus was: not one who came with power and wealth, but one who came in humility, compassion, and love for those most often overlooked.

Rocío Paz of the Philadelphia Community of Christ congregation in Lima, Peru, tells the story of one Palm Sunday when her congregation chose to honor Jesus in a beautiful way.

On that sunny Holy Week morning, volunteers gathered to prepare breakfast for their neighbors in need. Together they made 90 breakfast drinks and 90 loaves of bread. Some volunteers fasted and donated their own food so there would be enough. Then they went out in pairs, sometimes with a child alongside them, to share those breakfasts with street recyclers, street vendors, children who worked at traffic lights, and elderly people who had lost their homes in a fire.

Before they left, the congregation gathered for prayer and reflection. They read from Matthew 25: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

As Rocío shared, “We felt we shared God’s love with each person who thanked us deeply and showed us a sincere smile, as if we were seeing the face of Jesus.”

    That is Palm Sunday, too.

It is not only waving palms inside the sanctuary. It is following Jesus into the streets with open hands. It is recognizing Christ in the hungry, the lonely, and the struggling. It is discovering that when we give, we receive something holy in return.

    Disciples Generous Response Invitation

The Disciples Generous Response is our chance to say thank you to God. We give not from obligation, but from profound gratitude for the generosity we first received through Christ. Our offering is simply the echo of God’s grace in our lives. As we receive God’s gifts, our hearts are moved to respond faithfully, joining in the abundant spirit of the Creator.

Today, as we continue our Palm Sunday journey toward the cross and resurrection, may our gifts become another way of carrying Christ’s love into the world.

  • The Loaf of Bread

    Length: 1–2 minutes

    By: Jane McDonald

Summary: A story about a man who slept in a park and gave his only loaf of bread so others could have enough — a reminder that true generosity is measured not by the size of the gift, but by the love behind it.

    Story

Jane McDonald of Norwalk, Iowa, USA, tells the story of a congregation in New Port Richey, Florida, USA — a small storefront church near a city park.

The members of that congregation came from many different circumstances. Some lived in apartments. Some stayed in shelters. Some slept on park benches or in doorways nearby. Yet every Sunday morning, they gathered as family. They shared breakfast together, worshiped together, prayed together, and cared for one another.

One Friday evening, the congregation held a picnic in the park. Hot dogs were cooking on the grill, people were laughing and talking, and Jane had brought a pan of homemade cookies.

After everyone had eaten, Pastor Jerome announced that there were enough hot dogs for anyone who wanted seconds. There was only one problem: they had run out of buns.

He suggested that perhaps someone could go to the store.

Then one man quietly reached into his backpack — the backpack that likely held everything he owned.

“Wait,” he said. “I have a loaf of bread. You can use this.”

Jane realized that this loaf of bread was probably meant to feed him for the next several days. He was a man who slept in the park because he had no home of his own. And yet, without hesitation, he offered all that he had so that others could have enough.

In that moment, Jane said, she witnessed something like the widow’s offering in scripture. A man with almost nothing gave everything.

    Disciples Generous Response Invitation

The Disciples Generous Response is our part in a sacred cycle. We are blessed by God’s abundant grace, and in turn, our giving blesses the community and the world. This is not a transaction, but a joyful response to a loving God who first gave everything for us — sustaining the flow of grace that nurtures us all.

Sometimes we think generosity begins when we have more than enough. But the man with the loaf of bread reminds us that true generosity begins with the heart. It is not measured by the size of the gift, but by the love with which it is given.

As we share our offerings today, may we give not out of what is left over, but out of gratitude, trust, and love.

  • The Church That Became a Home

    Length: 1–2 minutes

Summary: A story about how one congregation in Paynesville, Liberia, opened its doors after a devastating storm — and discovered that generosity, unity, and trust in God can rebuild more than homes.

Slide Download: Use this slide during your Disciples Generous Response moment.

    Script

    Story

The rains came like thunder — angry, unrelenting, and uninvited.

In Paynesville, Liberia, more than 10 homes belonging to members of New Hope Congregation were destroyed in a single night. Walls collapsed, roofs were torn away, and families lost nearly everything.

But the church did not close its doors.

Pastor G.A. Anderson, upon hearing what had happened, instructed that the church building be opened as a shelter. That night, pews became beds. The altar where prayers had been offered now echoed with the breathing of sleeping children and the prayers of weary parents.

For weeks, the church became more than a place of worship. It became home.

    And then something extraordinary happened.

During worship one Sunday, a woman named Mother Jamamma stood and said, “I have nothing… but I’ll give 2,000 Liberian dollars to begin the reconstruction.” It was only about $10 USD, but it was everything she could give.

Her gift opened something in the congregation. Teenagers offered what little money they had. A shoemaker gave all he had earned that week. Children gave up their lunches to feed the workers. A market woman sold cloth to buy roofing materials. Men, women, and youth volunteered their time to rebuild.

Within two months, all 10 homes had been rebuilt — not with wealth, but with love, prayer, unity, and generosity. When people asked Pastor Anderson how it happened, he simply said, “We gave what we didn’t have… and God gave us more than we needed.”

    Disciples Generous Response Invitation

The Disciples Generous Response invites us to move beyond a fearful focus on scarcity and embrace God’s promise of abundance. When we give generously, we declare that our true security is found not in holding back, but in sharing the gifts we have received. Our offering is an act of trust — a recognition that God can multiply what we give and provide enough for our needs and the needs of others.

Today, we may not feel that we have enough. But the people of New Hope Congregation remind us that generosity is not about having more than we need. It is about trusting that God can use whatever we place in God’s hands.

As we give today, may we remember that even the smallest offering can become part of God’s unstoppable flow of generosity in the world.

  • One Meal at a Time

    Length: 1–2 minutes

    By: Chad and Mary Jendry

Summary: A story about how one congregation turned a simple act of generosity into a ministry of hospitality, building relationships, restoring dignity, and transforming lives.

Slide Download: Use this slide during your Disciples Generous Response moment.

    Script

    Story

Chad and Mary Jendry of Chandler, Arizona, USA, tell the story of a congregation that kept asking a simple question: “How can we share the love of Christ with the world around us?”

At first, the answer was simple. Members of the Chandler congregation prepared peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, fruit, and small bags of food to give away. When they learned they could no longer distribute homemade food, they adapted and began using packaged Manna Bags instead.

But they did not stop there.

Chad and Mary began going out into the streets, inviting people to church events and gatherings in the park. There were barbecues, games, clothing to share, and always Manna Bags to take along. Little by little, they were building community.

Then one day, a guest named Dave asked Mary if she had heard about the I-HELP program — Interfaith Homeless Emergency Lodging. The program helps people move from homelessness to stability by connecting them with identification, employment, housing, and other needed services.

The congregation joined that very month.

Since 2012, Chandler Community of Christ has opened its doors one night every month, and now even more often. Guests arrive in the evening, are served dinner, given a safe place to sleep, and then receive breakfast and a Manna Bag for the next day. Members of the congregation cook, shop, clean, serve, and simply spend time with the people who come.

Over the years, they have watched lives change.

Chad and Mary share, “We have witnessed many people move from homelessness and unemployment to becoming productive members of society.”

What began with a simple meal became something much larger: a ministry of relationship, dignity, and hope.

    Disciples Generous Response Invitation

The Disciples Generous Response is more than an individual act. It is a shared covenant. When we give, we weave our resources together, strengthening the fabric of our community. Our combined offerings become a tangible sign of our commitment to one another and to our shared life in Christ, ensuring we can promote communities of joy, hope, love, and peace.

The people of Chandler remind us that generosity is not only about money. It is about opening our doors, offering our time, sharing a meal, and creating space where Christ’s peace can be known.

As we give today, may our offerings help continue that work of transformation — in our congregation, in our community, and in the lives of those who need to know they are not alone.

  • From Property to Sacred Community

    Length: 1–2 minutes

    By: Peter Lonsdale

Summary: A story about how one congregation used its resources to support mission, build relationships, and create sacred community.

Slide Download: Use this slide during your Disciples Generous Response moment. It includes a photo from the story.

    Script

    Story

This is a story shared by Peter Lonsdale, co-pastor in Perth, Western Australia. It begins with a simple but important question: “How can our assets best support mission?”

Years ago, the congregation in Perth owned a second church property. Rather than leave it underused, they made a faithful decision to lease it to a childcare center. Since 2007, that choice has provided steady income to support ministry.
When the congregation’s Food Pantry moved into the church building in 2011, something powerful began to unfold. Property, finances, and people were all offered to God’s purposes. Renovations made the building more welcoming. A part-time coordinator was hired, and more than a dozen volunteers from the congregation and neighborhood joined the work.

Today, every Wednesday morning, about 40 people come through the doors. Many are families with children, people living on limited incomes, people recovering from addiction, those at risk of homelessness, or simply those who are lonely and need connection. They receive food hampers, morning tea, clothing, household items, and perhaps most importantly, they are welcomed with dignity and love.

The congregation provides financial support each year. Other churches, neighbors, schools, grocery stores, and bakeries all contribute as well. But what stands out most is what Peter says happened next: “People from the community want to know more about our church.” Some have volunteered. Some have joined in worship. Peter concludes, “Food Pantry has truly become an expression of sacred community!”

That is what generosity can do.

    Disciples Generous Response Invitation

Our offerings make God’s work visible in the world. The Disciples Generous Response is how we collectively fuel the mission of Community of Christ. These gifts become tangible acts of compassion, enabling ministries that proclaim Jesus Christ and promote communities of joy, hope, love, and peace. Our individual gifts combine to create a powerful force for good, turning our shared vision into reality.

As we share our gifts today, may we remember that even ordinary resources — a building, a donation, an offering — can be transformed by God into hope, belonging, and new life.

  • Welcoming Jesus in the Snow

    Length: 1–2 minutes

    By: Cindy Korf

Summary: A story about a small congregation in Yuma, Colorado, USA, that braved a blizzard to open their church for stranded travelers, and discovered that preparing a place of welcome is itself an act of faithful ministry, even when no one comes.

    Script

    Story

One winter evening in Yuma, Colorado, USA, the phone rang during supper.

A member of the congregation had alarming news. A blizzard had closed the highway west of town. Snow had been falling all day, and the wind was blowing so hard that drivers could barely see. Cars were beginning to line up outside town because every hotel room was already full.

The member asked a simple question: “Could we open the church for the stranded travelers to give them a warm place to wait out the storm?”

    The answer was immediate: “Yes.”

The congregation in Yuma was small, only 10 members lived in town, but they quickly began calling one another. Some made their way through hip-deep snow to the church. Others shoveled sidewalks and cleared parking spaces. Inside, people brought food, water, blankets, bedding, toiletries, games, and movies. Soup was put on the stove. Breakfast was prepared for the next morning. A schedule was even created so someone would stay at the church all night, ready to greet anyone who arrived.

As Cindy Korf later reflected, “Even though we had no travelers, we had left our warm, comfortable homes to go out in the storm to welcome stranded travelers as Christ welcomes each of us.”

In the end, no one came. The roads east of town were closed, and the travelers found shelter elsewhere.

But the church had already become what it was called to be.

The congregation had prepared a place of welcome. They had lived as if Christ himself might walk through the door. In many ways, he already had.

That is what our offerings do. They prepare the church to respond before we know exactly who will come or what need will arise. Our gifts help create communities of welcome, compassion, and hope. They make it possible for the church to be ready when the moment comes.

    Disciples Generous Response Invitation

The Disciples Generous Response is more than an individual act. It is a shared covenant. When we give, we weave our resources together, strengthening the fabric of our community. Our combined offerings become a tangible sign of our commitment to one another and to our shared life in Christ, ensuring we can promote communities of joy, hope, love, and peace together.

As we receive today’s offering, may we give with the same spirit as that small congregation in Yuma, ready to open our hearts, our hands, and our church to whoever may need welcome.

  • God’s Helper

    Length: 1–2 minutes

    By: Vicki

Summary: A story about a deacon named Chris in Hot Springs, Arkansas, USA, who responded to a simple request for help finding a wheelchair ramp by quietly building one himself, reminding us that generosity is not just something we give but something we become.

    Script

    Story

In Hot Springs, Arkansas, USA, there is a deacon named Chris.

Chris is a builder by trade and a servant of God by heart. Those who know him say he often helps others without thinking about the cost or what he might receive in return.

One day, a woman from the community called the church. She needed a wheelchair ramp so she could safely get in and out of her home.

The person who answered the call did not know exactly what to do, but she knew who to call. She reached out to Chris. Knowing he would probably be busy at work, she simply asked where the church might be able to buy a ready-made ramp.

But Chris did not give her the name of a store.

He said, “I’ll take care of it.”

Then he went to the woman’s house and built the wheelchair ramp himself.

Later, Vicki reflected on that moment and said she was “surprised that Chris would take the time out of his busy schedule to provide that need himself, and thankful that he did. But that is who Chris is, God’s helper.”

Chris’s act of service reminds us that generosity is more than something we give. It is something we become. When we offer our time, skills, resources, and compassion, God uses those gifts to bless others in ways we may never fully see.

    Disciples Generous Response Invitation

The Disciples Generous Response is where inner faith meets outward action. By choosing to give, we allow God to transform our hearts, moving us away from self-centeredness and into the generous spirit of Christ. Our offering is a concrete step in our growth, a spiritual practice that shapes us into more faithful and loving disciples.

Today, our offering supports the ministry of people like Chris, people who quietly respond to need, who use their gifts to serve, and who help the church become the hands and feet of Christ in the world.

As we receive today’s offering, may we ask ourselves not only what we can give, but who God is calling us to become.

  • Deepening Relationships

    Length: 1–2 minutes

By: Maria del Carmen Castillo de Mejia

Summary: A story about how women across the Central American Mission Centre gather each year to worship, learn, and grow together, and how that investment in discipleship sends them home strengthened in faith and ready to share Christ’s love with others.

    Script

    Story

Each year in the Central American Mission Centre, women from across the church gather together with great anticipation.

They come hoping to learn, to worship, to encourage one another, and above all, to have a unique experience with God.

The gathering is different each year, with a new theme and new opportunities for spiritual growth. Women spend time praising God together, building friendships, and deepening their relationship with Christ. They hear from gifted speakers, including leaders from the World Church, the Council of Twelve, and the First Presidency.

But perhaps the most important thing that happens is that women leave changed.

They leave with a deeper sense of God’s love. They leave strengthened in faith. And they leave inspired to share that love with others and to invite people to Christ.

As one participant reflected, these experiences “help us maintain and grow in our personal relationship with God, and this motivates us to invite people to learn about the great love of Jesus Christ.”

That is the power of ministry that nurtures and equips disciples. It does not end when the event is over. It continues as people return to their homes and congregations ready to live and share the gospel.

This gathering is made possible in two ways. Each woman contributes through her own registration fee. And part of the event is supported through World Church funds for leadership development, funds that come from the tithes and offerings of generous people around the world.

Because someone gave, these women are able to learn, grow, and discover new ways to serve. Because someone gave, the church is better equipped to fulfill Christ’s mission.

    Disciples Generous Response Invitation

The Disciples Generous Response provides essential resources for ministries that call people to Christ, encourage spiritual growth, and inspire transformation. When we give, we invest in the church’s ability to teach, nurture, and equip every follower to live out the good news.

As we receive today’s offering, may we remember that our gifts do more than support programs. They strengthen disciples, develop leaders, and help people experience the transforming love of God.

As the women of the Central American Mission Centre shared, “God does beautiful things when we submit to God’s will.” May our generosity be one way we submit ourselves to that work.

  • Blessed by Song

    Length: 1–2 minutes

    By: Paul Vincent | Advent

Summary: A story about a small congregation that visited a care home to sing Christmas carols with a member who could no longer attend worship, and discovered that in giving joy to others, they received far more than they brought.

    Story

In December 2023, a small congregation, fewer than a dozen people, sat together and asked a simple question: “What can we do to help someone else?”

As they talked, one idea rose above the others. A member of their congregation, Shirley, was now living in a care home after an injury. She could no longer come to worship, and the congregation missed her deeply.

So they decided to go to her.

They made plans to visit the care home and sing Christmas carols with Shirley and the other residents. Because they were not very confident singers, they invited one member’s son to come and play his euphonium to help lead the music.

When the day arrived, they came carrying carol sheets, simple instruments, Christmas hats, and more than a few nerves.

They were led into a room where residents sat in a large circle, with Shirley proudly seated in the middle.

Some residents sang every word. Others shook tambourines and tapped drums. Some followed their own tune or sang different words than those on the page. But together, they made music.

As Paul Vincent described it, “Eyes were brighter, the mood was lighter, and the Spirit settled on us like a warm blanket.”

Afterward, people stayed to talk. One resident shared that he too had once played in a brass band, and through that conversation, a new connection was formed.

The congregation had come hoping to bless someone else, but they discovered that they too had been changed.

As Paul reflected, “We had all been blessed with a little love that day.”

That is what generosity can do. It not only meets the needs of others. It transforms us. When we give our time, our resources, and our compassion, we become more deeply connected to one another and more open to the Spirit of Christ.

    Disciples Generous Response Invitation

The Disciples Generous Response is a spiritual discipline that helps align our hearts with God’s compassionate heart. When we practice generosity, we loosen the grip of fear and cultivate a spirit of trust, abundance, and love. Our offering becomes part of the work of shaping us into people who more fully reflect the generous love of God.

As we receive today’s offering, may we give not only to bless others, but with the expectation that God may bless and transform us as well.

  • Beyond the Church Walls

    Length: 1–2 minutes

    Story

Sometimes we think of ministry as something that happens inside the church building. But often, the most meaningful ministry happens beyond those walls.

In De Westereen in the Netherlands, the congregation crosses the street every six months to hold a worship service in the local nursing home. They join other churches and the nursing home pastor in bringing worship, music, and companionship to the residents.

At one recent service, Elder Ditty Bokma and Seventy Annette Henstra led worship around the theme “God Is Faithful,” based on Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians.

There was music from many different hymnals, with Jelle Dotinga playing the piano. Jelle is not a member of that congregation. He belongs to the Protestant Church in the Netherlands, but he loves helping “his” church and sharing in the ministry.

The message of the service was simple and powerful: God is always with us. Just as God guided the people of Israel through the wilderness, God continues to guide us through our own struggles and uncertainties. Paul reminds us that when we remain close to God, God remains faithful to us.

Poems titled “Love and Have Trust” and “Love One Another” were read aloud. The evening ended with coffee, tea, cake, and the joy of being together.

Afterward, those who helped reflected on how grateful they felt. As they said, “It gives a grateful feeling when you can bring such a ministry.”

That is what our offerings make possible. They support ministry that reaches beyond the church walls, into nursing homes, neighborhoods, schools, hospitals, and communities. Through our generosity, people who may feel forgotten are reminded that they are seen, loved, and never alone.

    Disciples Generous Response Invitation

The Disciples Generous Response is our chance to say thank you to God. We give not from obligation, but from profound gratitude for the generosity we first received through Christ. Our offering is simply the echo of God’s grace in our lives.

As we receive today’s offering, may we give with gratitude, trusting that God will use our gifts to bring faithful ministry wherever it is needed.

Disciples Generous Response - Discipleship

  • The Spirit Transforms

    Length: 1–2 minutes

    Story

Carolina Copa Caseres of Cochabamba, Bolivia, tells the story of a woman named Mirian.

Carolina first met Mirian in 2012. A few years later, Mirian and her three children became members of Community of Christ, and the whole family was baptized.

Mirian’s life was not easy. She was a widow, raising her children alone. She lived with progressive diabetes that slowly consumed her strength. She carried the burden of providing for her family while remaining active in the church.

And yet, Mirian was known for her joy.

She faced every challenge with courage, gratitude, and a willingness to help others. Carolina remembers wondering, “How does she do it? Why is she happy? Where does all that strength come from?”

    The answer was faith.

Mirian believed that every trial was an opportunity to trust God more deeply and to share God’s love with her children. Carolina wrote, “Her heart was full of kindness and generosity.”

Even in the midst of her own struggle, Mirian gave to others. Her life became a witness that generosity is not about having more than enough. It is about trusting that God can work through whatever we have.

Carolina says that Mirian changed her life. She writes, “Mirian’s attitude showed me that life is so precious that with a simple act of kindness and gratitude, you can have peace in your heart.”

That experience inspired Carolina to continue helping others, especially children and young people, and to teach them about God’s love. She came to believe that faith is not only something we say. It is something we live.

As Carolina says, “It’s not just saying I believe, but accepting and acting, being God’s example. The Spirit transforms lives.”

That is what our generosity can do. Our gifts become acts of faith and kindness that God uses to bless others. They support ministries that teach children, strengthen families, and help people discover that they are never alone.

    Disciples Generous Response Invitation

The Disciples Generous Response is our faithful practice of trusting in God’s abundance. We are invited to move beyond fear and believe that God can multiply our gifts, transforming our offerings into ministries that bring hope, healing, and peace.

As we share our offering today, may we remember Mirian’s example. May we give according to our means, trust in God’s care, and believe that even simple acts of generosity can change lives.

Summary: A story about Mumba Emmanuel, who grew up in Ndola, Zambia, and after losing both parents became the sole caregiver for his younger brothers. Through the support of a local Community of Christ congregation, he found education, purpose, and hope, and today leads the very school and congregation that once helped him.

    Story

Mumba Emmanuel grew up in Chipulukusu Compound in Ndola, Zambia. He was the oldest of three children. When he was young, his parents separated, and his mother worked hard selling vegetables to support the family.

Then tragedy came. When Mumba was in grade 10, his father died. A few years later, after he finished high school, his mother died as well. Suddenly, Mumba was left to raise his two younger brothers on his own.

He writes, “Suddenly orphaned, I stepped into the role of parent, raising my young brothers under extreme difficulty.”

It would have been easy to lose hope. But Mumba says that in those darkest moments, light began to shine.

The Community of Christ congregation in Chipulukusu became a sanctuary of hope. Church leaders welcomed Mumba and his brothers. They helped with rent. They encouraged him when his dreams felt impossible.

Mumba says, “The church not only welcomed me and my siblings but also helped with rent and provided encouragement that reignited our dreams.”

Through the church’s Young Peace Makers Community School, supported by HealthEdConnect, Mumba began volunteering. He enrolled his younger brothers in school. Soon, church leaders saw his gifts and encouraged him to keep going.

Through that ministry, Mumba received a scholarship to train as a teacher. Three years later, he graduated with a diploma in primary education.

Today, Mumba is the volunteer headteacher of the same school that once helped him and his brothers. He also serves as Zambia Program Coordinator, helping expand these ministries into other communities. And he now serves as pastor of the Chipulukusu congregation, helping vulnerable children find both education and spiritual care.

Perhaps most powerfully, Mumba shares that both of his younger brothers are now attending university.

What once seemed like a hopeless situation became a testimony of faith, community, and transformation.

Mumba writes, “My story is a powerful reminder that mission matters. When the church becomes the hands and feet of Christ, lives are changed, communities are strengthened, and hope is restored.”

The Disciples Generous Response is our chance to say thank you to God. We give not from obligation, but from profound gratitude for the generosity we first received through Christ. Our offering is simply the echo of God’s grace in our lives.

  • Experiencing Community Together

    Length: 1–2 minutes

    Story

Joey Williams of the Light of Hope Emerging Congregation in Independence, Missouri, USA, shares a story about what can happen when we pay attention to a quiet nudge from God.

In December 2022, Joey received an email asking if winter coats and gloves might be available for a Congolese youth choir made up of refugee families. At first, he thought it might be spam and moved it to his junk folder. But he could not stop thinking about it.

Two weeks later, he went back, found the message, and replied, “I’m interested, tell me more.”

That one small response led to a meeting with a young Congolese man in Independence. Over time, the young man visited the Temple again and again, first alone, then with friends, then with leaders from his group, and finally with his whole family.

On that fourth visit, Joey said to him, “I never would have imagined so many Congolese refugees here in Independence, Missouri. I used to work with Congolese groups in London and Belgium.”

The young man replied, “I would love to go to Belgium.”

Joey asked why, and the young man answered, “Because I have family there.”

He pulled out his phone and showed Joey a picture of his aunt. Joey immediately took out his own phone and said, “Here I am, standing in your aunt’s house with her.”

Joey writes, “This was no longer just a divine coincidence. God was up to something, and I had to listen.”

That listening led to the first worship service of the Light of Hope congregation. A week later, their youth choir sang at World Conference in front of thousands.

Then, months later, another Congolese refugee family in Louisville, Kentucky, USA, began worshiping in a basement. A Community of Christ congregation there opened their arms, their building, their tables, and their hearts. Together they shared meals, learned about the church, celebrated two baptisms, and welcomed 13 confirmations.

One of the Louisville pastors said, “This feels like the stories my parents would tell about the beginnings of the church here in Louisville!”

And Joey imagines what comes next: “Opportunities to worship together, sing together, learn together, and experience communities of joy, hope, love, and peace, together.”

    Disciples Generous Response Invitation

The Disciples Generous Response is how we collectively fuel the mission of Community of Christ. These funds become tangible acts of compassion, enabling ministries that proclaim Jesus Christ and promote communities of joy, hope, love, and peace. Our individual gifts combine to create a powerful force for good, turning our shared vision into reality.

Today, as we give, we are helping create the next story of welcome, connection, and hope.

  • A Gift of Haven

    Length: 1–2 minutes

    Story

One summer evening at Camp Farwesta, Angie Cluck was asked if she would help with a new camp for children who had lost a parent or sibling. She had lost her own son, who left behind five children, so she immediately knew this was something she needed to do, for herself and for her grandchildren.

The camp was called Camp Haven.

For months, people planned and prepared. Every decision was made with the needs of grieving children in mind. Donations came from churches and communities. Volunteers gave their time. People from many different walks of life came together to create a place of safety, love, and belonging.

As the staff gathered for training, they learned the stories of the children who would soon arrive. Angie said, “We knew this was bigger than us. We knew that through our faith, our life experiences, and by the guidance from our Lord, we would make a difference in the lives of these children.”

Then the children arrived, and Camp Haven came alive.

There was laughter. There were tears. There were moments of joy, friendship, and healing. Children who had experienced deep loss found a place where they were seen, supported, and loved.

Angie reflects, “These children taught me that life could be so hard, tragic, and unimaginable, but being resilient could bring joy, happiness, and love.”

She also writes, “I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to serve in such a presence of generous givers of their time and monetary gifts to make a safe and happy place for children to be loved and supported in the midst of their grief.”

Camp Haven happened because people gave. Some gave money. Some gave time. Some gave their experience, their compassion, and their prayers. Together, those gifts became a haven for children who needed hope.

Today, as we give, may we remember that our generosity can become a safe place, a moment of healing, and a sign of God’s love for someone who needs it most.

    Story

At the end of the COVID-19 shutdown in 2020, the congregation in Billings, Montana, USA, faced a difficult question: “How can we survive?”

After months of closed doors and isolation, many people felt discouraged. It seemed as though the life of the congregation had dried up.

But instead of giving up, the congregation began to pray, listen, and discern together. Slowly, they sensed God inviting them to trust again, to believe that Christ’s mission was still alive among them.

Gil Martell writes that through prayer and discernment, “the Spirit nudged us to deepen our trust in God’s divine presence.”

Five years later, the congregation has been transformed.

Attendance at worship and gatherings has grown. Generosity has increased. The congregation gives more to World Church Mission Tithes, local offerings, food and clothing drives, and support for people in need.

Children now help receive the offering each week. They carry a basket and a decorated glass jar through the congregation. Gil says, “The jingling of coins is a reminder of the blessings of generosity and community.”

The congregation has renewed its Thanksgiving and Christmas ministries for families in need. They have shared their building and their baptismal font with another church. They have joined with other congregations to stand alongside immigrants, the marginalized, and those who are afraid.

New people are coming. Younger leaders are stepping forward. And the congregation is discovering new ways to invite, welcome, worship, and serve.

Gil describes it this way: “Our congregational rebirth is experiencing God’s living breath and life through Christ’s mission.”

The story of Billings reminds us that our offerings are not just about keeping the church alive. They are part of how God breathes new life into a congregation and a community. Through our generosity, ministries are renewed, relationships are strengthened, and Christ’s mission becomes visible again.

    Disciples Generous Response Invitation

The Disciples Generous Response is an investment in hope. We give so that the church’s ministries, its welcome, and its witness can continue to bless new generations. Our generosity today helps create the future God is calling into being.

As we receive today’s offering, may we trust that God is still breathing new life into the church, and that our gifts are part of that rebirth.

  • Where Will Your Spirit Lead Me Today?

    Length: 1–2 minutes

    By: Huguette Tuteirihia

    Story

Huguette Tuteirihia of the Arenio Congregation in Tahiti tells of traveling with 12 missionaries to the island of Hereheretue.

When they arrived, the people were carrying deep sorrow. Huguette writes that tears, sadness, and doubt were etched on their faces. They were searching for answers. They were longing to know whether God was still present with them after so much suffering.

Huguette says, “I felt the Spirit of the Lord rest upon me, this Spirit of love that came to comfort them and comfort me at the same time.”

As the missionaries listened, prayed, sang hymns, and simply stayed present, something began to change. There was still silence. There were still tears. But slowly, hope began to rise.

Huguette writes, “The Spirit of God touched each and every person I met. A Spirit of hope, a Spirit of consolation.”

Sometimes the people could not even describe what they were feeling. Yet in the tears running down their faces, in the quiet, in the prayers, they began to remember that God had never left them.

“A God of love who loves them without limits,” Huguette says.

By the time she left the island, Huguette wrote, “I leave the island of Hereheretue with my heart filled with hope for this people of the sea.”

Then she asks a question that stays with us:

“God, where will your Spirit lead me today?”

    Disciples Generous Response Invitation

The Disciples Generous Response provides essential resources for ministries that bring hope, encourage faith, and remind people that they are not alone. When we give, we support the church’s ability to go where God’s Spirit leads, to places of sorrow, doubt, loneliness, and need, and to carry Christ’s love there.

Most of us may never travel to an island in the Pacific. But through our gifts, prayers, and generosity, we become part of that same ministry of presence and hope. We help make it possible for others to hear again that God has never left them.

As we share our offerings today, may we ask the same question Huguette asked: “God, where will your Spirit lead me today?” And may we trust that through our generosity, God’s Spirit will continue to reach those who need comfort, hope, and love.

    Story

Martha Ramirez Otáñez of the Dominican Republic Mission Centre shares a testimony from the difficult days of the pandemic.

At that time, Martha was unemployed. She had two children, rent to pay, and many responsibilities. Like so many people, she wondered how she would make it through.

But Martha says, “My faith never faltered.”

Again and again, she saw God provide in unexpected ways. Food appeared when the pantry was nearly empty. Help arrived when she needed it most. And each time she received something, she shared it with others.

Martha writes, “My pantry was full of food, and I gave the food God sent me to neighbors and people in need. I gave little of what I had.”

At first, she felt that what she had was not enough. Yet the more she shared, the more she discovered that there was enough.

“I reached a point,” she says, “where God blessed, and what I had wasn’t just a little anymore.”

Not only was she able to provide for her children and pay for her home, but during the pandemic she was even able to move into a better house.

Looking back, Martha says, “God always arrives on time. God always listens, and when we think everything is over, God acts at that moment.”

Her story reminds us that generosity is not about waiting until we have plenty. It is about trusting that God’s abundance is greater than our fear.

    Disciples Generous Response Invitation

The Disciples Generous Response invites us to move beyond a focus on scarcity and embrace God’s promise of abundance. When we give generously, we declare that our true security is found not in holding tightly to what we have, but in trusting that God will continue to provide. Our offerings become a powerful symbol of faith, transforming what seems too small into an overflow of blessing for others.

Today, as we share our gifts, may we remember Martha’s words: God blesses us not only so that we may receive, but so that we may share.

    Story

Sometimes generosity begins with something as small as listening to a quiet nudge from God.

On a recent trip to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, one member of the church had $60 USD left over from a project. Normally, he would have left the cash at home and simply used a credit card. But on the day he left, he felt compelled to put the money in his pocket.

He visited the Milwaukee congregation, shared in worship, and then started the drive home. About 30 minutes later, he stopped for gas and still wondered why he had brought that $60 USD.

While he was filling the tank, a young woman approached him. She looked nervous but hopeful. She explained that she was working temporarily in town when her wallet had been stolen. She was trying to get home to Hudson, Wisconsin, several hours away. Someone had already given her $20 USD, but she still did not have enough money for gas.

    Could he help?

He gave her $40 USD for gas. Then he asked if she had eaten. She had not, so he handed her the remaining $20 USD.

Tears filled her eyes as she thanked him.

Then, almost as if she were bracing for judgment, she said quietly, “I’m a stripper.”

Her eyes widened, as though she expected him to change his mind or ask for the money back.

Instead, he said, “God told me to bring this money, and now I know why. God has been generous to me, and I should be generous to others.”

In that moment, there were no labels, no assumptions, no judgment. There was only one person responding to another with compassion.

    Disciples Generous Response Invitation

The Disciples Generous Response calls us to move beyond simple charity and into solidarity with others. Our generosity is a tangible way to stand with those whom Christ called “the least of these,” reflecting the compassionate love of God.

We may never know what happened after that young woman drove away. But perhaps that is not the point. Generosity is not always about knowing the outcome. Sometimes it is simply about trusting God enough to say yes when we are given an opportunity to be a blessing.

As we share our offerings today, may we remain open to the Spirit’s nudges, to the moments when God invites us to share what we have with open hands and an open heart.

    Story

For 60 years, Dunfield House in the British Isles has been a place of welcome, peace, and transformation. It has been the setting for school trips, youth camps, church retreats, and sacred moments that have shaped lives across generations.

But recently, the future of Dunfield House was in jeopardy.

The roof needed urgent repairs. Without them, the building could no longer safely remain open. The cost was overwhelming: £165,000. At a time when many charitable organizations were already facing financial strain, it would have been easy to wonder whether this beloved place could survive.

    Instead, the community chose hope.

In August 2024, a fundraising campaign began. Individuals, congregations, and friends of Dunfield House all came together. Some gave generously. Others gave only what they could. But every gift mattered.

Along with their donations came memories and prayers:

“I came here twice in the late 70s with my school, some of the happiest memories I have.”

“Such a special place, which has blessed so many generations. May it be there for many more.”

“Treasured memories of such a special place. May future generations experience the blessing of this sanctuary.”

These were not simply donations. They were stories, gratitude, and hope made visible. Every pound given became part of a roof rebuilt by many hands.

And in only seven months, the entire £165,000 had been raised.

Because of that generosity, Dunfield House will continue to welcome children, youth, families, and seekers. It will continue to be a place where lives are changed and God’s Spirit is encountered.

    Disciples Generous Response Invitation

The Disciples Generous Response is an investment in hope. We give so that the church’s ministries and presence can continue to bless new generations. Our generosity today builds the foundation for the disciples of tomorrow.

Like the people who helped raise the roof at Dunfield House, we may never fully know all the lives our gifts will touch. But when we give, we become part of something larger than ourselves, a shared promise that places of welcome, peace, and transformation will remain for those who come after us.

    Story

In Augsburg, Germany, four young adults, Markus, Philipp, Noah, and Thomas Wagner, were invited to lead a communion service.

At the beginning of the service, they did something simple.

They stood in a circle and began creating what they called a “net of community.” One person held a ball of yarn and tossed it to someone else in the circle. As they did, they shared something meaningful about that person: a special memory, a gift they saw in them, or a quality they appreciated.

Then that person held onto a piece of the yarn and tossed it to someone else.

Back and forth it went, until a web of yarn stretched across the entire circle. What began as separate threads became something beautiful and connected.

    Thomas later prayed these words:

“Just as we have formed a web of fellowship out of wool, you have woven us together in your love and grace. Each individual thread symbolizes our individual strengths, qualities, and gifts.”

The young adults realized something important that day. No one thread could create the net alone. It only became strong and beautiful because every person contributed something.

Our giving works the same way.

Each gift we bring today is like one thread in that web. Some gifts may seem small. Others may seem large. But together they become something far greater than any one of us could create alone.

As we prepare to give on this Communion Sunday, may we remember that God is weaving us together, our gifts, our stories, our hopes, and our love, into a stronger and more beautiful community.

Any loose gifts received in the plate today will go to Abolish Poverty, End Suffering (Oblation). You may give through the website at CofChrist.org/give, by scanning the QR code on screen, or by placing your offering in the plate.

    Story

Arianny Yasiris Rodriguez Sanchez of the Dominican Republic shares a story about one congregation that chose to see possibility where others saw problems.

She remembers when her husband, Brother Richard Jiménez, became concerned about a group of teenagers in their community. Some of these young people were struggling. They were getting into fights, carrying knives, and causing their parents great worry.

But instead of turning away, Richard felt called to do something.

He began visiting each family, listening to their stories, and speaking with the parents. Once he had their support, he started a project where the teenagers could express themselves through music and theater.

    Slowly, something remarkable happened.

The teenagers who had once spent their time in harmful ways were now rehearsing plays, memorizing scripts, and practicing music. They came to church regularly and worked together with discipline and purpose. Their parents began to notice the change.

Arianny writes, “They were no longer carrying knives, nor were they involved in fights. Now they were memorizing scripts for a play.”

Why did this make such a difference?

Because these young people discovered that they mattered. They found a place where they were welcomed, valued, and loved.

As Arianny explains, “In the congregation, they had a place where they were special, a place that restored their hope.”

That is the kind of community Christ calls us to create: a community with open doors, where every person knows they belong and where lives can be transformed by love.

    Disciples Generous Response Invitation

The Disciples Generous Response reminds us that our offerings are not only about sustaining buildings or programs. They are about creating places of hope. Through our generosity, we help make possible ministries that welcome the forgotten, encourage the struggling, and open new paths for those who need them most. When we share our time, talents, and resources, we become partners with God in fostering communities of joy, hope, love, and peace.

Today, as we give, may we remember these young people and all those who are waiting for someone to open a door for them. May our gifts help create more places where people are reminded that they are loved, valued, and never beyond hope.

  • All Are Called

    Story

Isaac Bennett of Chennai, India, tells of a powerful change taking place within his mission center.

In many churches and communities, women have long been expected to remain in the background. They have often been told that leadership, preaching, and decision-making belong to others.

But in Isaac’s congregation, something different is happening.

Women have become some of the strongest leaders in the life of the church. They lead fellowship gatherings, provide pastoral care, organize outreach, and help shape the future of the congregation. Their gifts, wisdom, and commitment are changing the community around them.

Isaac writes, “Women are no longer silent spectators but active leaders, mentors, and visionaries.”

What makes this story so moving is not simply that women are serving. It is that they are finally free to use the gifts God has always placed within them.

Their leadership reminds us that God does not call only a few people to serve. God calls all people. The Spirit is poured out without limits, across every age, background, and circumstance. When we make room for every voice, the whole community is strengthened.

Isaac describes this change as “a theological awakening.” It is the discovery that God’s mission unfolds most fully when those who have been pushed aside are welcomed to the center.

    Disciples Generous Response Invitation

The Disciples Generous Response invites us to share our resources in ways that empower people and nurture their God-given gifts. Our offerings support ministries that open doors, encourage leadership, and create communities where everyone can participate fully. Through generosity, we help build a church that is more inclusive, more compassionate, and more faithful to the vision of Christ.

Today, as we bring our gifts, let us ask: Whose voice still needs to be heard? Whose gifts are waiting to be encouraged?

May our offering be more than a financial gift. May it be a sign of our commitment to a church where all people are empowered to lead, serve, and share in God’s mission.

  • Called and Empowered

    Length: 1–2 minutes

    By: Birsuna Mandal

Summary: A story about how leaders in the Buripadar Mission Centre in Odisha, India, patiently opened hearts and doors, leading to the ordination of six women and a deeper understanding that God calls all people to serve.

    Story

In the Buripadar Mission Centre in Odisha, India, leaders faced a difficult challenge.

When the mission centre was formed in 2018, it included 13 congregations and more than 400 baptized members. The church wanted to live fully into the mission and policies of Community of Christ, including the belief that all are called by God, women and men alike.

But in that community, for more than 50 years, only men had been seen as church leaders. The idea of women serving as priests, teachers, elders, and deacons felt unfamiliar and even uncomfortable.

So the leaders began patiently. From 2018 to 2019, they traveled among the congregations teaching, listening, and sharing the church’s identity and Enduring Principles. They reminded people that God’s call is not limited by gender. They spoke about women in India who had changed the nation, women like Indira Gandhi and Mother Teresa. Slowly, hearts began to open.

Then, in November 2019, something remarkable happened. As Birsuna Mandal wrote, “Community of Christ has given the importance that all are called; that means male or female. It is equal to have ordination in the congregation for the mission of Christ.” Fourteen elders and two teachers were ordained in the mission centre. Among them, six women accepted God’s call and were ordained as teachers and priests.

For the people of Buripadar, this was more than a policy change. It was a sign of God’s Spirit at work. Congregations began to see the gifts women brought to ministry. New voices were heard. New leaders emerged. And the mission of Christ grew stronger because more people were empowered to serve.

Today, those women continue to minister faithfully in their congregations, helping lead a young mission centre with courage, compassion, and hope.

Their story reminds us that our offerings make God’s work visible in the world. Through our generosity, ministries are supported, leaders are trained, and barriers are broken down. Gifts given here do more than sustain budgets. They help create communities where every person can hear and respond to God’s call.

    Disciples Generous Response Invitation

The Disciples Generous Response is how we collectively fuel the mission of Community of Christ. As we receive today’s offering, may we remember that our generosity joins with the generosity of others around the world. Together, we support ministries that proclaim Jesus Christ and promote communities of joy, hope, love, and peace, so that all people may know they are called, valued, and empowered.

    Script

    Story

Isaac Bennett of Chennai, India, shares a story about a fellowship gathering that changed the way his community understood mission.

As the group met together, a difficult challenge emerged. They lived in a society where many Christians were taught to avoid close relationships with people of other faiths. Some had even been told never to share a meal with someone from a different religious background.

Those teachings had created fear, separation, and misunderstanding.

But through honest conversation, scripture, and shared experience, something began to change.

Isaac writes that their fellowship became “a space where such deeply rooted prejudices are gently confronted and transformed.”

Most of the participants were women. As they listened to one another and reflected on their faith, they began to see that their mission was not one of separation, but of relationship. They discovered that sharing a meal was not a compromise of faith, but an expression of it.

Isaac says, “We now see sharing a meal not as a compromise of faith, but as an expression of it, a sacred act of extending Christ’s love beyond boundaries.”

What a beautiful image of the gospel. Around a table, barriers can fall. Strangers can become friends. Fear can give way to understanding. And Christ’s peace can be shared in ways words alone cannot accomplish.

    Disciples Generous Response Invitation

The Disciples Generous Response reminds us that generosity is about more than money. It is also about offering hospitality, opening our hearts, and creating space for others to belong. We are called to practice mission not by withdrawing from the world, but by participating in it with courage, compassion, and love. When we give of ourselves and our resources, we help build bridges in a divided world and bear witness to the peace of Christ.

Today, as we share our offering, may we remember that every gift we give becomes part of God’s work of bringing people together. May our generosity help create larger tables, stronger relationships, and a community where all are welcomed in Christ’s love.

You may give through the website at CofChrist.org/give, by scanning the QR code on screen, or by placing your offering in the plate.
